Walks & Wildlife

There are many scenic walks right outside your door at Laburnum House. The Huntspill River Nature Reserve lies between Bridgwater and Burnham-on-Sea and runs the length of the Huntspill River from the Seaward Outfall Sluice to the Gold Corner Pumping Station.

The Huntspill River is an artificial waterway, being constructed in the early 1940’s to supply water for the Royal Ordinance Factory at Puriton. Its constructed nature is evident from the markedly straight course which it takes

through the Sedgemoor countryside.  In 1954 it was incorporated as part of the Bridgwater Bay National Nature Reserve, by English Heritage. Although far from being designed as  a wildlife preserve, it has become a notable haven for various, sometimes rare, species of birds, fish and insects.

Fishing

Due to its fairly straight and uniform course, the River Huntspill is nationally recognised as a popular site for coarse fishing. As a result, it is highly popular with anglers and has been the venue for numerous match-fishing competitions over many decades.

Clay Pigeon Shooting

Our clay pigeon shoot is especially designed for people of all abilities. Intermediate and top shots can be positioned in a way which makes the shoot very demanding. Whilst our little shoot is very informal, we have a 100% safety record – why not give it a try?

We charge from £20.00 for a 25 bird shoot, which includes guns and cartridges. Beginners can have one to one instruction by our resident coach, Joby, and the tuition fee depends upon the level of instruction required.

To book a shoot or to arrange instruction, call Joby on 07936 887944.
